A man had a hair transplant a few days ago. After he washed his head, he was able to pull out scabs and some hairs from the transplanted area. He wants to know if it is possible for grafts to fall off after a transplant.

Dr. Amiya Prasad explains that it is not unusual for a few hairs to be shed after hair transplantation. Sometimes, when the scab is flaking off, it tends to cause the breakage of hair and not the actual grafts. He usually tells his patients that even after a few days, the grafts wouldn't fall out. These grafts are deeply embedded under the skin and must be physically cut out order for it to be nonviable.

In Dr. Prasad's practice, he uses a combination of his transplant procedure and extracellular matrix to improve the rate of healing and graft survival rates. A certain percentage of grafts that are placed will not necessary survive and there are many factors for it. It usually takes about a year to see the full result of a hair transplant.

Dr. Prasad suggests that he speak to his doctor about this and that he shouldn't stress out too much about losing a hair or two here and there. It is important to remember that it is not likely that the follicle or the key part called the dermal papilla will fall out. Also, he should keep in mind that out of the thousands of grafts, some hairs may not make it depending on how much existing hair he had. Also, a certain number of hairs may not survive because of shock loss, so it's best for him to continue to communicating with his doctor to assess his condition.
