In this video, Maria Montgomery with Gatormade trailers Gatormade Trailers defines a frequently asked question, what is GVWR?
GVWR is an acronym for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. Now, many people confuse that term with the amount of weight their vehicle or trailer can hold, but isn’t true.
Your GVWR is the maximum weight a vehicle can weigh as described by the manufacture. So that means, at no point in time, should your vehicle weigh more, loaded or unloaded, than the GVWR.
Now, in addition to GVWR, there are two other numbers associated with that rating that will help you understand your load capacity even better.
First there is your curb weight. Your curb weight refers to the weight of your vehicle as it is with nothing on it.
Second is Payload. Payload refers to the weight of your load. If your trailer has a GVWR of 10,000 lb. that doesn’t mean your payload can actually be 10.000 lb. If your trailer’s GVWR is 10,00 lb.
The curb weight is, let’s say, 2,000 lb., then that means your payload cannot exceed more than 8,000 lb.
Now, will your trailer carry a heavier payload? Yes, trust me, people try and do it on a regular basis. But, it isn’t at all safe and it will dramatically shorten the life of your trailer.
The very last thing you want is to get someone hurt or to cause a serious accident because you overloaded your trailer.
So, if you are shopping around for a trailer and you need to haul 10,000 lb., you do not want to get a trailer with a GVWR of 10,000 lb.
You want to get a trailer with a higher GVWR of maybe 14,000 lb. because you need to factor in the curb weight and the payload.
