I want to be clear that this is my understanding based on Scripture, because we are told to trust in the Lord and lean not on our own understanding (Proverbs 3:5), so I do not claim this as absolute truth but as something I am discerning; when I read about Peter, I see that even in a moment clearly orchestrated by God, where Cornelius prayed at the ninth hour (Acts 10:3), the same hour Jesus gave up His spirit on the cross (Matthew 27:46-50), and an angel sent for Peter while God prepared Peter through a vision (Acts 10:3-6; Acts 10:9-16), when Cornelius fell at his feet, Peter lifted him up and said he himself was just a man (Acts 10:25-26), showing a refusal of outward elevation, and when I continue through Scripture, I see Peter as a key apostle but not an unquestioned supreme authority, because leadership appears shared among the apostles where James gives the final judgment at the council (Acts 15), and Peter himself is openly corrected by Paul (Galatians 2:11), and I also see that early church leadership was not defined by later traditions like celibacy since Peter had a wife (Matthew 8:14; 1 Corinthians 9:5), so while I understand that some interpret Jesus’ words about Peter being the rock (Matthew 16:18) as establishing a unique role, I personally struggle to see in Scripture where Peter is established as the first pope in the form that is taught today, and while we are told we can recognize people by their fruit (Matthew 7:16), we are also reminded that only God truly knows the heart (1 Samuel 16:7), so this is not a judgment of any person, but a sincere question of whether what we see practiced today fully reflects the humility, accountability, and structure demonstrated by the apostles in the Word of God.
