Geotechnical Centrifuge is a Physical Modeling Equipment in Geotechnics capable of testing models in an environment whose gravitational pressure can reach up to N times the Earth's gravity.

The UENF Geotechnical Centrifuge has, in operation, about seven meters in diameter and two baskets, which house the containers (models), allowing two simultaneous tests. The purpose of Centrifugation is to subject a reduced scale physical model to a modified gravitational field in order to reproduce the state of tension under which the prototype is subjected in inverse relation to the scale used. During the flight, the centripetal force arising from the acceleration of the centrifuge imposed on the model, generated in the circular motion, is equivalent to the modified gravitational force.

The main advantage of using the Centrifuge is the possibility of reconstructing the stresses arising from the gravitational forces under which the prototype will be subjected and the flexibility in modeling extreme cases or phenomena still little known. With this, using the similarity laws, it is possible to reproduce the behavior of the structure or the phenomenon studied in reduced models as if they were in the real dimension of the prototype.

"A Centrífuga Geotécnica é um Equipamento de Modelagem Física em Geotecnia capaz de testar modelos em um ambiente cuja pressão gravitacional pode atingir até N vezes a gravidade terrestre.

A Centrífuga Geotécnica UENF possui, em operação, cerca de sete (7,0) metros de diâmetro e duas cestas, que abrigam os recipientes (modelos), permitindo dois testes simultâneos. O objetivo da Centrifugação é submeter um modelo físico em escala reduzida a um campo gravitacional modificado a fim de reproduzir o estado de tensão sob o qual o protótipo é submetido em relação inversa à escala utilizada. Durante o vôo, a força centrípeta decorrente da aceleração da centrífuga imposta ao modelo, gerada no movimento circular, é equivalente à força gravitacional modificada.

A principal vantagem do uso da Centrífuga é a possibilidade de reconstruir as tensões decorrentes das forças gravitacionais a que o protótipo será submetido e a flexibilidade na modelagem de casos extremos ou fenômenos ainda pouco conhecidos. Com isso, utilizando as leis de similaridade, é possível reproduzir o comportamento da estrutura ou do fenômeno estudado em modelos reduzidos como se estivessem na dimensão real do protótipo."
