Five Countries Ran DNA Tests on the Nazca Mummies — Each Country Got a Different Result

In 2017, mummified specimens were publicly disclosed from Palpa Province in the Ica Region of Peru, near the Nazca Lines. The specimens feature three elongated fingers, elongated skulls, and a skeletal structure inconsistent with known hominid anatomy. Radiocarbon dating of some specimens places them at approximately 245 to 410 AD. X-ray and CT analysis has confirmed internal organ structures and bone density consistent with a biological organism rather than a constructed object. DNA analysis was conducted by independent laboratories in Peru, the United States, Russia, Mexico, and Japan between 2017 and 2022. The results produced by these five independent analyses using modern DNA sequencing technology range from 98% human DNA to sequences containing material matching no known species in any genomic database. Five analyses of the same physical specimens produced directly contradictory results — an outcome that modern sequencing methodology should not produce. The Peruvian government has not issued an official species classification for the specimens. No peer-reviewed consensus paper identifying the specimens' species, origin, or classification has been published as of 2024. The specimens remain in custody in Peru. The researchers who initially disclosed the specimens have faced simultaneous accusations of hoaxing and claims of legitimate scientific discovery. The physical specimens continue to be examined. The classification remains open.
