Controlled Composition Clause and Excess Mechanical Royalties

In this clip from www.artistshousemusic.org - Michele Singer, director of legal and business affairs for jazz and classical artists, talks about the meaning of a controlled composition clause and excess mechanical royalties. She makes the point that a controlled composition clause deals with compositions owned and controlled by the artist and that every record company asks the artist to grant the record company rights to control part of the artists composition. She then goes on to discuss the number of songs a record company will pay the artist for on an album and how an artist sometimes owes the record company for having to pay mechanical royalties for covers of other people's songs.
