“I’m an American.” Ten shades of ten Korean-Americans. A series tracing the journey of Korean-Americans – how they struggled, settled, and then succeeded in the United States. The sixth episode – the story of Mun Byung Kwon, an acupuncturist.

As an acupuncturist who can ease pain as well as mind, Mun Byung Kwon is attentively treating his patient today.

“The profound efficacy of acupuncture that heals so many people interested me to study it systematically. So I came to the U.S. and became an acupuncturist.”

Mun tried to begin his career in America at first as a health care worker. But he did not forget the value of acupuncture he learned in South Korea, and the desire to put it to practice led him to make continuous efforts that made him come thus far.

Mun Byung Kwon / Acupuncturist
“It took eleven years. I studied acupuncture and traditional Korean/Eastern medicine at South Baylo University in California for four years and also at Yuin University for another four years. Next, I went to Beijing, China to continue studying it for another three years. Altogether, I studied eleven years.”

Mun’s efforts gained him qualifications to care for patients, the work that became meaningful and valuable for him.

“Working as an acupuncturist and using needles to treat and heal people who otherwise had difficult time taking care of their health and the kind of respect they have toward me (after seeing their health improve) provide me priceless joy and sense of worth.”

Mun understands and feels empathy toward his patients who are beginning their life here in America, enduring difficult situations as immigrants because he went through it.

Mun Byung Kwon / Acupuncturist
“Immigrants don’t have spare time to take care of their body because they are busy working hard to survive and build the foundation of their life. They have no leisure time to care for themselves. It’s regrettable to see so many patients’ health failing as a result.”

Mun treats his patients upon that understanding of their life as hard-working immigrants. The evidence of his volunteering service toward them can be seen all around the treatment room.

Mun Byung Kwon / Acupuncturist
“Sincere desire to lend my practice to help improve people’s health naturally led me to receive awards. I wanted to volunteer my service secretly to do good deeds.”

America enabled Mun to strive and achieve his dream. Along the way, he was able to reap the fruits of his labor, share his talents, and become acknowledged. To Mun, America is a country where achieving new aspirations are possible.

Mun Byung Kwon / Acupuncturist
“We all have American dreams we want to achieve. I was able to achieve mine here in America, in a blessed county that made it possible.”
