You Have 3 Seconds to Stop Trade Show Attendees—Use These Booth Triggers
Heather Bundgaard from Booth Boss Bootcamp explains that trade show booths have about three seconds to earn attention before attendees walk past, and outlines a three-layer system to “rig” those seconds using triggers and pattern interrupts.
She describes how buyers scan for change, instantly judge fit, and avoid sales ambushes, so booths must interrupt autopilot, create curiosity, and feel safe.
The system stacks a nonverbal hook (20–30 feet: movement, sight, sound, smell), a verbal hook (8–10 feet: clear headline and promise with low cognitive load), and a human hook (3–5 feet: prepared, low-pressure one-sentence openers).
Examples include active looping screens, games with leaderboards, micro demos, bold simple graphics, attention-grabbing sounds, and food/coffee smells, plus conversation starters and a free resource PDF.
