"Flee! Novella for String Quartet" by Amy Riebs Mills
In honor of Women's History Month, The United States Air Force Band is proud to highlight the service of Captain Amy Mills and her piece "Flee, A Novella for String Quartet"
In 1991, Captain Mills assumed command of The United States Air Force Band, making her the first woman Commander and Conductor of a premier military band. She was the first woman to serve as Music Director of the Singing Sergeants, conducting the full-time professional chorus in over 350 concerts around the country, and in a featured performance at the 1988 Chorus America national convention, broadcast by NPR. Additionally, Captain Mills founded and served as Music Director of the National Women’s Symphony in Washington, D.C., a professional orchestra featuring the music of women composers along with recognized masters.
"Flee!" is a programmatic novella in string quartet format, depicting the exhilarating yet treacherous journey of escaping captivity. The quartet takes us on an experience of elation mixed with newfound freedom and anxiety over potential recapture. Amidst fleeting moments of sadness for those left behind, they quickly press on. The strings' narrative unfolds through four episodes: Leap, Hide, Scurry, and Project Bravado, each fraught with musical and auditory danger. Ultimately, they find Refuge, where they can celebrate their liberation.
Enjoy the sounds of The United States Air Force Band's string quartet in "Flee" by Amy Riebs Mills.
