You're hiring for skills that don't matter anymore
Every major technology shift kills yesterday's skills. Software engineering is at that moment right now. And most business owners don't see it.
If you're still hiring developers who write code fast, you're already behind.
AI coding tools changed what matters. The bottleneck isn't typing code anymore. It's everything that happens before and after the code.
Think about the GPU shift in the 90s. Engineers used to hand-code every polygon on the screen. Then GPUs arrived and automated that entirely. The engineers who survived didn't keep hand-coding polygons. They became lighting engineers, animators, physics programmers. The skill shifted from execution to supervision.
That's exactly what's happening with software now.
So if you have a dev team in your business - or you're hiring developers - here's what actually matters:
1. Can they write a specification so tight that AI can't misinterpret it?
2. Can they design a test suite that becomes the product itself?
3. Can they debug a system they didn't personally write?
Architectural thinking. Judgement under uncertainty. Supervising non-deterministic agents.
At We UC, that's what we hire for now.
Comment CEO and I'll send you my full operating system framework for how I think and how I operate as a CEO.
