The challenges of long-term care in Germany | 2024

People in Germany are getting increasingly older. Often, they age in good health. However, some of the additional years may be linked with the need for long-term care. This means a person depends on the help of others over a longer period of time.

There are currently around 5 million people in need of care. The increase in people of very old age is one of the reasons why the number of people in need of care will continue to rise in the coming decades – to an estimated 6.7 million by 2050. At the same time, there are ever fewer young people who could provide care. Nevertheless, people with care needs must be able to depend on good care which includes safety and respect. Therefore, the issue of long-term care is currently one of the greatest challenges for our society.

The Zentrum für Qualität in der Pflege (ZQP, Centre for Quality in Care) is a non-profit, non-governmental foundation. Its goal is to improve the health care, especially the quality of the long-term care, for older care-receiving persons in Germany. All information of the ZQP is open access, free of advertising and independently developed.
