Flatwoods, West Virginia, September 12th 1952. A group of boys playing outside see a bright object streak across the sky and appear to land on a nearby hill. They run to tell an adult, a local woman named Kathleen May, who agrees to investigate with her sons and several other children. What they found on that hill has never been explained. A pulsating red light in the trees. A smell so powerful and acrid that several in the group became immediately ill. And standing near the light, a figure over ten feet tall with a dark body, a face that glowed green, and eyes that reflected their torch beams like an animal in the dark. The figure appeared to glide rather than walk and moved toward the group before they fled in terror. Several members of the group experienced nausea, swollen throats and eyes, and convulsions for days afterward consistent with exposure to a chemical irritant. A local journalist who investigated the site the following day reported a circular flattened area of grass and an oily residue with the same smell witnesses described. The United States Air Force investigated and officially concluded the witnesses had seen a meteor and an owl.
