Building America's First Commercial-Scale Offshore Wind Farms

The United States offshore wind industry is transitioning from pilot projects to commercial-scale installations along the Atlantic Coast. As of 2024, operational facilities include the 30 MW Block Island Wind Farm (Rhode Island, 2016) and the 132 MW South Fork Wind Farm (New York, 2024), with 4,097 MW currently under construction across projects like Vineyard Wind (Massachusetts), Revolution Wind (Connecticut/Rhode Island), and Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind. The development pipeline includes over 50 gigawatts of planned capacity, supported by federal leasing programs and state renewable energy mandates. These facilities use fixed-bottom turbines in shallow waters up to 60 meters depth and include subsea export cables connecting offshore substations to onshore power grids.
