At that time, most of the population of Galata lived within the city walls. With these developments, the face of the street has also improved.
When we came to the 20th century, the name of the street, which was called "Grande Rue de Pera", "Büyük Cadde" and "Cadde-i Kebir" with the declaration of the republic, became "İstiklal Caddesi". During this period, the street experienced its most magnificent times with its cinemas, galleries, patisseries and hotels.
Until the 90's, the street lost its old atmosphere and lost its attraction center feature. In the 90s, the necessary importance was given to Istiklal Street again, the roads that could spoil the atmosphere of the street were closed, the street was cleaned and various restorations were carried out. Istiklal Street that has survived until today. It has become an important center in terms of eating, drinking, entertainment and shopping.
