#922 SoulCalibur III (PS2) Hidden Characters (3/6): Yoshimitsu playthrough.
A playthrough of the hidden character Yoshimitsu in the PS2 port of Namco’s SoulCalibur III/ Soul Calibur 3.
The crazy permanent guest character is back, and more nonsensical than ever. He’s lost his pojo jumping attacks, replaced instead by this hilariously cheap poison gas attempt I would have expected from a wrestling heel. In fact, Raiden in the very first Fatal Fury has an attack just like it!
Yoshimitsu’s sword attacks feel really lacking here. Indeed, his weapon-based moveset on the whole doesn’t feel particularly fun to utilise. His kicks on the other hand, goddamn. He kicks like a mule, dealing stellar damage, hitting quickly and most importantly being able to combo into his stellar roundhouse in an air juggle. Even he has a follow up to his roundhouse kick, which is just brilliant, and reminds me more of something out of Virtua Fighter than SoulCalibur.
Yoshimitsu’s a mixed character therefore. For a start, don’t even get me started on his voice. He sounds like an American attempting to be Japanese attempting to be a Shakesperian actor. It’s one of the absolutely most jarring, bizarre, culturally bewildering voices I’ve ever had the mispleasure of hearing, and it’s another strange element in an already strange title. Still, Yoshimitsu is relatively competent here, but I definitely think he’s lost a bit of his “pizzazz”, for lack of a better term, from the past few games.
Next up, everyone’s favourite Sophitia clone returns.
