A quick way to get good tension when turning quilts or working on small quilts, when there will not be a lot of time spent - magnetic tool holders are a great option.

I turn my quilts every once in a while, mostly when I don't feel confident that I can quilt feathers and other motifs in all directions. While I realize practicing in all directions will help greatly, for client quilts I still sometimes turn. These bars come in handy in these cases.
