Live at Savoy, 1981 Review by Jason Ankeny (Allmusic).
Recorded live in New York City on August 25, 1981, this entry into the King Biscuit series captures Kim Carnes at the peak of her career, with her smash "Bette Davis Eyes" riding high as the biggest single of the year. It's a highlight here as well, and really the only Carnes original which still holds up all these years later; the best of the remaining moments are given over to covers, among them the Stones' "Under My Thumb" and the Box Tops' "Cry Like a Baby."

Live at Savoy, 1981 is a live album by American singer-songwriter Kim Carnes, recorded at the Savoy nightclub in New York on August 25, 1981 as part of her Mistaken Identity tour. The album was released in 1999 by King Biscuit Flower Hour Records, a label owned by the American radio program King Biscuit Flower Hour.
Jason Ankeny of AllMusic rated the album two and a half out of five stars and stated that her performances "capture Carnes at the peak of her career".
In a contemporary review of the concert for The New York Times, Stephen Holden wrote that Carnes had an "effervescent stage presence" and "could hardly be a more fitting representative of the shifting sounds and attitudes of mainstream Los Angeles pop".

New York Times, Aug. 26, 1981, By Stephen Holden.
With her sweet, husky voice, blond good looks and effervescent stage presence, Kim Carnes, who appeared at the Savoy on Monday and last night, could hardly be a more fitting representative of the shifting sounds and attitudes of mainstream Los Angeles pop. The recent success of ''Bette Davis Eyes,'' the culmination of her sixalbum career, signaled a change in the sound of Los Angeles pop away from traditionally mellow harmonies toward a more brittle, new-waveinfluenced style.
With only minor alterations in her approach, Miss Carnes revamped her image from a weepy victim of love into a more combative rock-androller. In the best cuts of ''Mistaken Identity,'' the album that contains ''Bette Davis Eyes,'' Miss Carnes convincingly portrays a swaggering female roustabout.
Not surprisingly then, Miss Carnes opened her set on Monday with a raunchy version of the Rolling Stones' misogynistic anthem, ''Under My Thumb.'' But it was the professionalism of Miss Carnes and her eight-piece band, composed of the same musicians who back her on ''Mistaken Identity,'' that impressed more than any calculated image. While Miss Carnes exhibited the bubbly enthusiasm of a cheerleader, and her singing was accompanied by knowingly theatrical gestures, she communicated a sense of fun more than any deep commitment to her material.
Her excellent band, whose synthesizer player, Bill Cuomo, was responsible for the sound of ''Bette Davis Eyes,'' reproduced the sound of her records with impressive fidelity. And Miss Carnes introduced a new song, ''Say You Don't Know Me,'' whose mixture of melodrama and a tunefulness sounded like a sure-fire follow-up to her recent hit.
(A version of this article appears in print on Aug. 26, 1981, Section C, Page 20 of the National edition with the headline: KIM CARNES SINGS AT SAVOY).
