Arte incómodo: "Falenas" de Carlos Verger (1920) | Invitadas

El término falena —mariposa nocturna de cuerpo delgado y anchas y débiles alas, fatalmente atraída por el fuego— se asocia aquí a las mujeres que se ofrecían como acompañantes en los cenáculos elegantes. Verger se concentra en la mirada de una de ellas, en la que se revela esa supuesta inestabilidad mental que las teorías higienistas atribuyeron a las mujeres de vida desordenada, consecuencia de su falta de realización como esposas y madres.

Carlos Verger Fioretti (1872-1929)
"Phalaena", 1920

The term phalaena, a moth with a thin body and broad delicate wings that comes out at night and is fatally attracted to fire, is here associated with the women who offered to escort men at elegant coteries. Verger concentrates on the gaze of one of them, which reveals the supposed mental instability attributed by hygienist theories to women with disorderly lives, a consequence of their lack of fulfilment as wives and mothers.
