Puroflux Sand Media Filter Basics (backwash mode)

Puroflux sand media filters require a backwash cycle to rid the filter of the accumulated debris. This function would be common in most any media filter. The sand filter backwash can typically be initiated by three criteria: pressure differential, time clock setting, or manual initiation.

As the media bed loads with debris; the filter will have an increasing pressure drop. Once the terminal differential pressure is reached (DP); a pressure switch contact shall close initiating the backwash. The backwash may also be initiated manually or by time clock setting.

However the backwash is initiated; the valves shall change position to reverse flow within the filter vessel. The reversed flow fluidizes the media bed releasing the debris via the waste connection. The freeboard area allows the media to remain within the vessel.

Once the cycle is complete; the valves return the normal operating position and the filtration process will resume.

Backwashing can be accomplished with either cooling tower or an external source such as city water. (The backwash source should be specified in advance.)

The backwash cycle is crucial to the sand filter’s operation and when done routinely will allow for the longest media life.
