Iconic Looks & Sounds of David Gilmour's Strat

Look back at David Gilmour’s now-storied career and you’ll see what appears to be a variety of black Fender Stratocaster guitars—from big headstocks to rosewood necks—even one with a humbucker crammed between the bridge and middle pickups! Well, what if we told you that all those photos are of the SAME guitar, which the guitarist modified continuously throughout his time with Pink Floyd and during his solo career?

In fact, Gilmour’s modifications were so extensive and frequent that there are too many to name here! But, briefly: What started as a ‘68 Strat refinished in black to cover its original 3-color sunburst was originally paired with a maple neck and oversized Strat headstock, which was later replaced by a neck handmade by Grover Jackson (then employed by Wayne Charvel) and custom-embossed w/ the original Fender logo, making it appear to be an earlier Fender Stratocaster neck and headstock.

Later, in ‘78, Gilmour had a mini-toggle switch installed, and then in the ‘80s he experimented with a few different bridges, and subsequently re-filled the routed-out hole. Eventually, he retired the guitar, and it lived on display in a Hard Rock Hotel—until 1997, when Gilmour recommissioned his favorite black Strat and brought it back on tour, as is, remaining in its final configuration until it sold in 2018 for a record $3,975,000.
