Jelly & Leia the Cocker Spaniels

Jelly & Leia the Cocker Spaniels are brother and sister. Jelly is 15 and Leia is 5. Jelly doesn’t come to the farm as much anymore but when he does he loves long walks in the paddock with lots of farm odours to breathe in. He also likes birthday cake, chicken is his favourite. Leia’s favourite day at the farm is running after Luke on the Pee Wee followed by intense Jedi stares into his eyes, a few licks and a head nuzzle.

Here’s Jelly and Leia’s story as told by their Mum:

Jelly is our home’s very own celebrity. His 15th farm b’day pawty in January was liked and watched more times than the total of anything our household has ever managed 😊. He holds his celebrity status like a real pro though. He was born into the serious end of Dog Showing and Breeding in California and was sent to Australia aged 3. At age 9, his “time in the sun” was over and he was no longer useful, this was when we adopted him and gave him the retirement he deserved. He can’t see or hear very much anymore, but you better believe he can sense the change in air-pressure when a can of tuna is opened, he’ll come racing for the kitchen even from the deepest of slumber. Jelly. Loves. Food. For years, I’ve been putting his step sister’s unfinished food up high on the bench where she can get to it later in the day. Since working from home, we’ve caught out old mate who springs up onto the lounge (only when he thinks we aren’t looking), up onto the bench and polishes it off with absolute glee. We’ve been thoroughly played because when we are around, he can’t possibly get up on the lounge without a little help. This innocent looking chap is also a toy destroyer. There isn’t a doggie toy in the house that still has it ears, arms, legs or tails. Due to Jelly’s age, he is now only a casual farm visitor as he doesn’t really tolerate hotter weather or wet and colder days anymore. I know he loves it though. When we came for a visit for the xmas pawty, he displayed moments of pure puppy like joy and play. Those memories will give me comfort and bring happy tears to my eyes for the rest of my days.

Yes we are tragic Star Wars fans. Leia is coming up to six years old now and she is a beautiful and loving (and at times boisterously cheeky) soul. Since the day she came home as a tiny puppy, when she wasn’t chewing just one shoe of every pair, digging out new plants or pulling apart pillows, she has had this deep stare into our eyes (we call it the Jedi mind-meld). On more than one occasion it has made me miss the bus for work as I couldn’t pull away. She definitely knows what she is doing. She only does this for her people and as soon as I saw her looking like that at Uncle Luke, I knew she was comfortable at the farm. Running, swimming and snuggling are her favourite things. Leia seems more reserved at the farm than she is here, she has always been a bit shy around other people and when she is away from her home patch, but over the year and a bit that she has been attending, her confidence is definitely growing. She loves her farm days, and we love her farm day videos and her quiet farm day hangovers (they are definitely real). She instantly knows the routine of when we are going to go and meet the doggie bus, her excitement and happiness is infectious and addictive… and if I could wiggle my butt like she does on these mornings I’d be the envy of every belly dancer in the world… or more likely I’d dislocate both my hips trying 😊. It is a true privilege for her and us to be part of something so amazing, we do not take it for granted.

At the end of this video is Jelly’s 15th birthday at the farm back in December last year.
