It is raining. You are driving at your normal gap.
Car in front brakes suddenly.
Your normal distance is not enough.
Wet roads have already doubled the distance
you need to stop — and you never adjusted 🌧️⛔
⏱️ You have 3 seconds to answer...
✅ ANSWER: Double your following distance in rain
✅ THE RULE: Wet roads double your stopping distance — always increase the gap

In dry conditions your tyres grip the road
through a combination of friction and tread contact.
Water on the road surface creates a film
between the tyre and the tarmac.
That film reduces friction significantly.
Your brakes apply the same force.
Your car is travelling at the same speed.
But the grip needed to convert that brake force
into actual stopping is reduced by up to 50%.
The result — you need twice the distance
to come to a complete stop.
Your dry weather gap was calculated for dry conditions.
Rain changes everything. Your gap must change too.

🌧️ Double the two second rule in rain
In dry conditions the two second gap is minimum.
In wet conditions that becomes four seconds.
Count from when the car ahead passes a fixed point.
You should not reach that point
for at least four seconds in wet conditions.
📏 How to measure four seconds
Pick a fixed point — a lamppost or road marking.
When the car ahead passes it — count.
One thousand. Two thousand. Three thousand. Four thousand.
If you pass that point before four — you are too close.
⬇️ Reduce speed as well as increasing gap
A larger gap at the same speed still closes fast
if the car ahead brakes suddenly.
Reduce speed in rain — not just increase distance.
Both together give you the margin you need.
🌊 Standing water — additional danger
Puddles and standing water cause aquaplaning.
Your tyres can completely lose contact with the road.
Slow significantly before driving through
any depth of standing water.
Never brake in standing water.

The most common wet weather rear end collision
involves a driver who was maintaining
what felt like a safe following distance.
It felt safe because it was safe — in dry weather.
They had never adjusted for the conditions.
The car ahead braked. They braked.
Physics decided the rest.
Double the gap is not cautious driving.
It is the minimum physics requires in rain.
