CALIBRE 321
This latest iteration of the beloved Speedy was released just last year in 2020. Its most notable feature? The calibre 321, which was the same movement worn on the Moon and during every lunar mission that followed. Only now, it is reimagined for reference 311.30.40.30.01.001.

The old and new calibre 321 are virtually identical, with the main difference being that the older version features copper bridges while the newer edition utilizes Omega’s proprietary Senda gold.

That also means that the modern interpretation of the calibre 321 does not include any amenities that some have come to expect from a newer movement, such as anti-magnetism or a chronometer certification.

The calibre 321 is one of the most sought-after features of any vintage Speedmaster. With production ceasing around the end of the 1960s, there aren’t many examples of the cal. 321 Speedmaster available. And, until just recently, it wasn’t possible to invest in a Speedmaster featuring the cal. 321 outside of the vintage market.

That’s why the release of the Omega 311.30.40.30.01.001 is so exciting. Once again, collectors can purchase a Speedmaster with the iconic cal. 321 hard at work within the case. The first example released in 2019 was produced in platinum. However, the series is available in stainless steel as of 2020 via the handsome edition that we’ve unboxed here today.

Now, let’s take a closer look at the watch’s specs.

OLD MEETS NEW
With the revival of the calibre 321 comes a neo-vintage design set to match. Straight lugs flank the case measuring 39.7mm instead of the contemporary twisted style seen on current production Speedmasters. The case also doesn’t feature crown guards between the pushers and the crown. Additionally, the lugs measure 19mm instead of 20mm.

Omega took the design of the case itself from the same ref. 105.003 Speedmaster watch that was worn during America’s first spacewalk performed by Ed White in 1965.

The retro design elements don’t stop at the case. Reference 311.30.40.30.01.001 also features the Speedy’s iconic step dial with applied hour markers, signature Moonwatch hands, and an older-style Omega logo.

Modern elements include a resilient black ceramic Tachymeter bezel topped with a white enamel scale, anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal over the dial, and a sapphire crystal case back that gives the wearer a view of the remarkable cal. 321 movement within. The solid link bracelet features a machined clasp and flat links. These elements are compared to true vintage Speedmasters featuring an older-style Hesalite crystal, non-ceramic bezel, and closed case back.

Keen-eye collectors will delight in smaller, vintage-inspired details, such as a dot over the 90 marker on the bezel, lume with a slight vintage hue that resembles genuine patina, and a small Omega logo engraved on the crystal, like that on the Hesalite crystal Speedmasters.

Although not 100% true to the design elements of a genuine vintage Speedy, the ref. 311.30.40.30.01.001 is designed more to showcase the revived movement inside, and this Speedmaster certainly delivers.

OMEGA 311.30.40.30.01.001 PRICE
A single watchmaker manufactures the movement powering the Speedmaster 311.30.40.30.01.001. It’s a highly specialized movement produced in a dedicated facility within the Omega factory, which makes producing it in large quantities without sacrificing quality quite difficult.

A watch this special is also widely sought-after on the retail level, which also means it commands a premium on the secondary market. At retail, ref. 311.30.40.30.01.001 costs $14,100 and is already more expensive than traditional Speedmasters. Used, one can expect to pay at least $20k.
