The Truth About the Schwa Sound in American English | Introducing the Range and Quality of Sounds
This lesson will probably change the way that you look at American English Pronunciation, and the schwa sound in particular. The truth about the schwa in American English is that these two IPA symbols (/ʌ/ /ə/) are two slightly different qualities of the exact same sound! The /ʌ/ sound is the more clearly enunciated, clear version and the /ə/ (what's commonly called "the schwa") is actually a less enunciated/lazier/faster version of the same sound. Note that this does NOT include reductions, which is a special use of this sound, just like reducing "or" to "er" is a special use of the ER vowel as a reduction sound.
