Stop Losing Work When You Compact Claude Code
Every long Claude Code session eventually hits a wall: you have to compact to reclaim the context window — and the moment you do, whatever you didn't write down is effectively gone. Most of us never write it down, because doing it by hand is just enough friction that we skip it.
This video walks through a fix: a skill called handoff-doc. One command reads back through your entire session — the decisions you made, the files you touched, what's still open — and distills it into one structured doc written to a file on disk. That's about thirty seconds of your attention. Because it lives on disk, it's durable BEFORE you ever hit compact: whatever the reset throws away, your handoff is sitting safely in a file.
The full habit in one sentence: when context crosses your threshold (I use ~20%), finish your micro-task, run the skill, then compact. Watch the context percent — that's your sensor. The threshold is the trigger. The skill is the mechanism that makes it effortless. And it's not just for the AI: the doc reads like a structured briefing for a human teammate, or for you after a week away.
🔧 Install handoff-doc
In Claude Code (plugin):
/plugin marketplace add nathanonn/agent-skills
/plugin install handoff-doc@nathanonn-agent-skills
On another agent (Codex, Cursor, Copilot) — one-liner:
npx skills add nathanonn/agent-skills --skill handoff-doc
In Claude Code it shows up as /handoff-doc. On other agents, just describe the task and it triggers automatically.
