Catch Middle East Meditations ft. the JLCO with Wynton Marsalis and Naseer Shamma this Jan. 20-21
A milestone event in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s distinguished history! Don't miss this performance: https://2022.jazz.org/middle-east-meditations
Marsalis and the JLCO collaborate with revered Iraqi oud virtuoso, composer, educator, musicologist and UNESCO Artist for Peace Naseer Shamma, blending the magical flavors of the Tigris River with Mississippi River-descended swing. Friends since they met in Abu Dhabi in 2010, the two visionaries—whose first formal concert together in 2017, in Marciac, France, was reviewed as an “unprecedented fusion” between jazz and the millennia-old short-necked forerunner of the lute—will perform together for the first time at Jazz at Lincoln Center, undertaking new works arranged by Marsalis, Shamma and orchestra members. The occasion marks the first time that the JLCO has hosted and featured an Iraqi artist. Immediately following these shows in the House of Swing (and Oud), the JLCO with Special Guest Naseer Shamma will tour select cities around the United States.
