Light waves from a source, such as a light bulb or the sun, are not polarized. This means that they oscillate in different planes.
However, once reflected from a surface, they become polarized – they will only oscillate in one plane.
This is why the artist in the video could use a polarizing filter (polaroid) to further polarize the wave to fully absorb it.
