Very often Im asked, “What’s a critical skill for leadership?”
While there are a number of skills and traits that you must learn and exhibit as a leader, I want to tell you about one skill that will be critical to your success as a leader.

Your Communication skills.

Here’s why.

Let’s take the corporate environment for a minute.

When you start working, what separates you from the rest will be factors such as your talent, your skills within your given field, your work ethic, your attitude, your persistence, your willingness to go above and beyond. You will start early, finish late and make sure things get done.

These are some of the factors you will have to do or have done to rise up.

And as you rise, so does the relevance and requirement of this critical skill - your ability to present your message with clarity and confidence. Your ability to speak to inform, influence, inspire and impact.

In short. Your communication skills.

You no longer have to necessarily exercise your talent or skill in your field.
You will have others who will do it.

You no longer have to do the leg work.
You have to get the team’s buy-in so that every one is on the same page, and collaborating instead of doubling up.

You no longer are in charge of the task at hand.

You are a leader, the producer of a movie.
It becomes your job to bring everything together, and drive your people towards the desired outcome.

And the greatest of leaders, in any field will tell you, that their communication skills has been critical to their success.
