False friends between Portuguese and English

Hi everyone, Catherine here. I’m a Brazilian Portuguese teacher on italki and today I’ll be talking about some very common false friends between Portuguese and English.
False friends or false cognates are pairs of words in two different languages that look the same, or sound the same but have different meanings.

So, the first one (the classic!)

PUXE - PUSH

In Portuguese PUXE comes from the verb PUXAR, which means to pull.
While in English that means the opposite action, which we say EMPURRAR in Portuguese.

So, I always get confused!
In Portuguese:
PUXAR = to pull
EMPURRAR = to push

In English:
PUSH = empurre
PULL = puxe

Second one:PRETENDER - (TO) PRETEND

In Portuguese pretender means I intend, to intend.
Eu pretendo viajar nas férias. I intend to travel on vacation.

While to pretend in Portuguese means fingir.
Ele finge estar doente.
He pretends to be sick.

PRETENDER = to intend
TO PRETEND = fingir

Next one:

SUPORTAR - (TO) SUPPORT

In Portuguese suportar means to tolerate.
For example: Eu não suporto o frio.
I don't tolerate the cold weather.

And, if you want to say to support in Portuguese, prefer saying apoiar.
For example: Ele apoia as minhas decisões.
He supports my decisions.

SUPORTAR = to tolerate
TO SUPPORT = apoiar

Next one:
CAFETERIA - CAFETERIA

In Portuguese cafeteria means a coffee shop.
For example: Vamos tomar um café naquela cafeteria.
Let’s have a coffee at that coffee shop.

While, if you want to say cafeteria in Portuguese try to say refeitório.
For example: O almoço é servido no refeitório.
Lunch is served in the cafeteria.

CAFETERIA (PORT) = coffee shop
CAFETERIA (ENG) = refeitório

And the last one:

PASTA - PASTA

Pasta in Portuguese means toothpaste, or a kind of a folder.
For example: Você viu minha pasta?
Which means: Have you seen my toothpaste? Or Have you seen my folder?

While pasta in English means macarrão in Portuguese. A kind of Italian food.
So: Você gosta de macarrão? Do you like pasta?

PASTA (PORT) = toothpaste/folder
PASTA (ENG) = macarrão
