Q&A #118 Fake Pre-Owned Watches From Asia? & How to Purchase a Watch Outside Your Local AD

New Grey Market Episode: "My Plan to CRUSH $130 Million in Sales in 2024"

It's very hard not to mark Asia as the capital of where fake things are made. Based on data produced by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, "based on seizure data, it appears that at least two-thirds of the world's counterfeits depart directly from China." China and Hong Kong are the biggest sources of fake goods, followed by Turkey, Singapore and Germany. There is an entire city in Asia where you can find replicas of almost every item such as watches, clothing, and smartphones. But is it really fine to say that pre-owned watches from Asia have the highest risk of being fake? In today’s Episode 118 of Q&A Tuesday, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on this based on my experience in operating a watch business in Hong Kong. In addition, I will talk about how you can purchase a watch that is unavailable from your local AD and I’ll share my thoughts on which watch brand will reign should the watch world ever start from scratch.

Stay tuned to hear my answers to the following questions:

⚙️ When buying a watch, should I go with the heart or go with the mind? You always say watches are not investments, but how far?

⚙️ Since your organization operates in Asia, how often do you run into fake versions from sellers? Is it more common in certain parts of the world to be presented with fake watches by owners who were unaware or is it all over?

⚙️ I understand that one should purchase what they like and continue to wear it. However, seeing as how some watches trade 1-2x their RRP (list price), is this a "good" purchase?

⚙️ I’d like the opinion of an experienced Audemars Piguet guy named Roman about the best Audemars Piguet options in the range of $20k to $40k USD that complement my current luxury watch collection.

⚙️ Let’s say the watch world is given a clean slate. All models exist, except our preconceived notions of brand value and population perception are totally gone. We can only judge a watch by it’s look, fit, finishing, etc. Do brands like Rolex, AP, Patek Philippe and Richard Mille still reign supreme? Or is there a chance others like JLC or GP become the lusted brands?

💕 BIG THANKS to Gabri, FontAllenDude, Smitty, Nathaniel, and Ryan for their questions and comments!
