The Tragic Story Of Handley Page Victor XM714
The V-Bombers were the United Kingdom's nuclear attack force during the Cold War. They served as the main strike force for if the UK needed to drop a nuclear bomb onto an area. During the time of increased tension against the Soviets this could have very much been a possibility. The V-Bombers were made up of the iconic Avro Vulcan, the Vickers Valiant and also the Handley Page Victor. Each one of these aircraft could have carried and dropped a nuclear warhead should they needed to.
The Handley Page Victor had the largest bomb bay of the three V-Bombers, and could in theory have dropped the biggest payload causing a colossal amount of damage to an area. It's a futuristic looking aircraft but also a devastating one. In this video however we look at the tragic story of a specific Handley Page Victor, XM714.
During the Cold War, many RAF bases around Great Britain had V-Bombers on stand-by at airfields in order to launch them as soon as a possible attack was launched on the nation. Within minutes they could be airborne and ready to drop a nuke. XM714 was one of these aircraft based at RAF Wittering, however on a training mission tragedy would strike this remarkable aircraft.
