From Crisis to Cultivation: A Community Joins Together to Feed the People in Olón Ecuador

Amelia and JP VLOG 203: In our last vlog, we introduced you to the team of volunteers helping to feed the unemployed, elderly, disabled and families of Olón Ecuador now. In this vlog, the team took us to the community garden that's being built to help feed the people in the future.

Olón and nearby communities historically relied on agriculture for their economy, but when the tourism boom hit, that all changed. People left the fields to work on the beach and for restaurants and tour companies. Now, the fields are overgrown with trees, shrubs and vines that must be cleared to make room for crops.

The community garden being built now is a proof of concept that will form the blueprint for a return to agriculture for this region. Their plan is to be able to supply their own food, as well as sell it to provide income when tourism is lacking (or nonexistent).

We're very excited to be a small part of this process and we hope that the actions they're taking here will inspire other communities around the world to return to our roots. We simply cannot continue to rely on such a distant and disconnected supply chain.
