What is a Snapshot?

A snapshot takes a representation of the Amazon Elastic Block Store volume and stores it in Amazon S3
and it is stored redundantly in multiple Availability Zones. The initial snapshot is a complete copy of the volume. Next snapshots will be incremental block-level changes only. This is a quick and secure way to recover entire volume data.
