Vivian Vance - One of the Most Beloved Supporting Actresses in History from I Love Lucy

Let me tell you about Vivian Vance, one of the most beloved supporting actresses in television history. If you grew up watching classic sitcoms in the 1950s, you know her instantly as Ethel Mertz, the sharp-tongued, loyal landlady and best friend to Lucille Ball on I Love Lucy. Her chemistry with Ball created some of the funniest moments ever captured on screen, and she brought warmth, wit, and perfect comic timing to every scene.

Born Vivian Roberta Jones on July 26, 1909, in Cherryvale, Kansas, she was the second of six children in a family that moved to Independence when she was young. From an early age, she discovered a passion for acting, though her mother strongly opposed it on religious grounds, viewing the stage as sinful. Undeterred, Vivian changed her last name to Vance and began performing at the Albuquerque Little Theatre in 1930, where she took on diverse roles and earned local support that helped fund her move to New York. There, she made her Broadway debut in 1932 with Music in the Air and built a solid stage career through the 1930s and 1940s, appearing in musicals and plays alongside stars like Ethel Merman and Bob Hope.

In 1951, when Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were casting I Love Lucy, director Marc Daniels recommended Vance after working with her in theater. Desi saw her perform and knew she was perfect for Ethel Mertz—the frumpy, sarcastic neighbor who constantly got pulled into Lucy’s wild schemes. For six seasons from 1951 to 1957, plus specials in The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour, Vance delivered hilarious physical comedy, dry one-liners, and genuine heart, making Ethel an iconic sidekick. In 1954, she became the first actress to win a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a comedy series.
She continued collaborating with Ball on The Lucy Show from 1962 to 1965, playing Vivian Bagley, and made guest appearances later on. Despite health struggles in her later years—including strokes and cancer—Vance remained active when she could, always remembered for her generosity and friendship off-screen.

She passed away on August 17, 1979, at the age of 70 from bone cancer in Belvedere, California. Vivian Vance wasn’t just Ethel Mertz; she was a woman who made a difference
