Spiritual vs. Worldly Life — How to Reconcile? — Karma Yoga
Any time you devote to spiritual practice is stolen from worldly activities, and vice versa. This conflict is resolved through karma yoga. Life itself becomes your spiritual practice.
The teachings of karma yoga, the spiritual practice of worldly activities, is a main topic taught by Sri Krishna, an avatara or incarnation of Lord Vishnu, in the famous Bhagavad Gita. According to the non-dual spiritual teachings of Advaita Vedanta, karma yoga is necessary to become prepared for enlightenment, moksha. Without becoming an adhikari, prepared student, it is not possible to gain atma jnana, self-knowledge, discovery of your true nature (atma) as sat chit ananda, limitless, uncreated conscious existence, the so-called inner divinity that is the actual source of happiness and contentment. Karma Yoga includes a number of attitudes that transform ordinary activities into spiritual practice. Those attitudes include being a mumukshu, a seeker of enlightenment, understanding the law of karma, understanding Ishwara, God, as the karma phala data, the giver of the results of your deeds, and cultivating a prayerful sense of gratitude.
Swami Tadatmananda is a traditionally-trained teacher of Advaita Vedanta, meditation, and Sanskrit. For more information, please see: https://www.arshabodha.org/
