Tiny Koala Joey loves cuddling plush toy and zookeeper
Just as many children across Australia are starting their Kindergarten journey and preparing to start big school next year, this week Bana the Koala Joey here at Symbio Wildlife Park has started his own journey towards Koala Kindergarten.
With his first keeper handling session occurring this week, albeit with the comfort of a Koala plush toy, and his doting mother 'Imogen' never being far away, the adorable koala joey successfully entered into Koala Kindergarten.
As he becomes more confident over the coming months, he will slowly be introduced to last year's joeys who have formed the closest bond, and start venturing more and more around sanctuary independent from his mother 'Imogen'.
Handling captive bred Koalas such as Bana is vital for their well-being, as not only does it help forge trust and a deep connection with his Zookeeper 'Liz', it also allows zookeepers to do their weekly weighing, vet checks, and relocation amongst the trees in the exhibit without any stress.
Bana forms part of an ever-growing captive-bred insurance population, which especially now that the koala is listed as an endangered species is so important for the long-term survival of the species.
Here at Symbio you can book your very own Koala experience, where Liz will take you in to meet of all koalas, as you cuddle up to them for your once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity, and learn all about their plight in the wild, and what we are doing to turn the tables on extinction.
