Escaped Mount Rinjani Eruption
I spend 3 days trekking Mount Rinjani in Lombok, Indonesia when the unthinkable happens. The volcano erupts. Everyone hears the eruption at the hot springs and has not idea what is going on. The porters panic. I have no idea what is going on. Was it a landslide, bomb, what? I don't see ash in front of me. Then I look behind and see everyone with their cameras facing the sky. There is a huge mushroom cloud right over our heads. Some people panic and ask our guide if we can leave. Our guide assures us that it is ok to stay and we are not in danger. His english is unclear and therefore we don't trust him. I see no hot ashes flying toward us and am relieved that everything will be ok. We head back to the beach where everyone has just deserted, leaving behind clothing and flip flops. We are the only ones around. Eventually my group calms down and we eat lunch.
It was thrilling, scary and exciting all at the same time. What are the chances you get to eat lunch and watch a volcano erupt. And what are the chances I hike with a fellow Hokie. One of the best experiences of my trip so far.
It was incredibly difficult. On day 2 we woke up at 1am after little sleep to start the climb to the summit before sunrise. Much of this hike is steep and the ground is made up of loose dirt, causing your feet to slide with every step. The peak of the mountain in almost 2 miles up, causing altitude sickness. At times you are freezing and others times you are burning up.
The view however is incredible. Things are better when you have to work for them. This is a must do for any outdoor adventurer when in Bali.
