Keir Starmer says most Labour MPs still back him, despite growing rumours that his leadership is under threat. He tried to brush off the talk of a challenge, saying most of his party just want to get on with governing. But the pressure is still building after the Mandelson vetting scandal, which has triggered calls for him to resign from opposition parties and criticism from inside Labour too. Starmer is standing by his decision to sack top civil servant Sir Olly Robbins, insisting it was unacceptable that concerns over Lord Mandelson’s security clearance were not clearly passed to him.

Across the pond, Donald Trump was rushed to safety after shots were fired near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton in Washington, DC. Reports say the suspect, identified by authorities as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California, was armed and was quickly detained, while one Secret Service agent was hit in protective gear and survived. Trump later called him a “lone wolf whack job”, and the event was cancelled after panic broke out among guests.
