Give a donation: then dive into a deadly quarry?
What starts as a peaceful hidden getaway quickly turns into something much darker. This is the story of Blue Cove Hideaway—and why it was ultimately shut down.
Owned by Charles Womack, Blue Cove Hideaway was an abandoned rock quarry transformed into a low-cost escape for young people. Instead of charging admission, Womack accepted donations, hoping to give high school and college kids a place to relax without spending much.
The quarry featured crystal-clear water, camping areas, and a risky attraction—a homemade platform built on a 30-foot bluff where visitors would leap into the water below. It quickly became a thrill-seeker hotspot.
But the danger was real. In 2015, a 31-year-old man jumped from the platform and never resurfaced. Just one year later, another tragedy struck when a 25-year-old man dove from the same spot and drowned. Both bodies were later recovered by authorities.
Despite these incidents, Womack wanted to keep the hideaway open. However, in 2018, the McMinn County Circuit Court ruled the site a public nuisance and permanently shut it down.
Would you have taken the risk?
