Watercolor Palette Showdown: Daniel Smith 24 Half Pan Metal Set vs. Earth Friendly Da Vinci Palette

Today we are going to take a look at the new Daniel Smith Metal 24 Half Pan Watercolor Set and compare it to Denise's Earth Friendly Da Vinci Watercolor Palette. My palette was curated and released in 2019, avoiding the use of cadmium, cobalt, manganese, and nickel pigments while still aiming to be a solid mixing palette with a wide variety of earth tones to choose from. Daniel Smith's new palette was released nearly a year later in 2020. It has a lot of similarities with the Earth Friendly palette, but has a couple differences, including the use of cobalt and nickel pigments. These colors add granulation and luminosity respectively at the cost of being less earth friendly, so ultimately it's up to personal preference for which one you'd enjoy more! I hope this video can help you to answer that question for yourself.

EDIT: It was pointed out to me that Jane Blundell has an expanded set that looks very similar to these two palettes. Jane, if you're watching, I'm sorry, I honestly hadn't seen your expanded set. Like I said in the video, I am not the first person to use this array and I'm not the last. There are still some differences between the three overall palettes, and one thing I found interesting when looking at Jane's list is that she had Piemontite on it, which I mentioned wanting included in the DS version! Either way, I do hope this video is helpful in deciding between the different palettes. And again, my sincere apologies if Jane did indeed collab on this palette - I hadn't seen anything advertised as such!

This video does not include a paid sponsorship and was not asked for or prompted by either company. It is intended as an unbiased review for viewers who are looking to acquire one of these palettes by providing similarities and differences so that they can make their own decision about which to purchase. However, in full disclosure, I do receive commissions from the general sales of my palettes from Da Vinci, and I received the Daniel Smith palette as a gift from one of my patrons.
