The Continental Divide Ride: The Hard Way

The Continental Divide Trail (CDT) runs 3,100 miles across the United States between Mexico and Canada. Motorcyclists wanting to follow this route normally follow the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route (GDR) as it is easier and more friendly to motorcycles. Much of the CDT passes through designated wilderness areas and either does not permit mechanized vehicles or is remote and rugged enough to make riding difficult.

On August 20th, 2020 I set off to ride my motorcycle from the Mexican Border to Canada following the Continental Divide and CDT as closely as possible. This is the full length video for the entire trip, so settle in and enjoy while I try to see if I can make it from Mexico to Canada along the CDT.

If you choose to follow this route please be prepared for extended and remote backcountry travel. Have multiple methods of communication, at least one which does not depend on cell service. Following this route you will have entire days without cell coverage. You should travel with a group, and have supplies to be able to support yourself if needed. It is highly recommended you do not take a bike larger than a 700 Tenere or 790 Adventure R on this route, there are multiple areas in each section where larger bikes will not just be difficult, they will struggle to fit down the trail.

Please be a good ambassador, close any gates behind you, do not antagonize wildlife or livestock you encounter, stay the trails, and pack out anything you bring in with you. Be aware areas of the route require OHV permits and certain trails are closed Dec-Mar. Check local resources before setting out.

If you attempt the route and encounter problems (locked gates, path issues) feel free to message me so I can correct the GPX files. Find me on ADVrider: Mountainmedic13
