Activity Erta Ale 08-09.05.2022
Erta Ale is an active basaltic shield volcano in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia. It is situated in the Afar Depression. The volcano is 613m high and since January 2022 the southern lava lake is coming back.
The level of the lava lake is currently not as big as 2018 but it is increasing.
42 degrees Celcius and above in one of the most hostile areas on earth and the current ongoing violence between the civil war parties make it currently very difficult to visit the volcano.
