Practical Social Democracy and the Future of the Left

With populism on the march and a Labour government under pressure at Westminster, what is the future of ‘social democracy’? What can governments learn from this political tradition, and what would ‘practical social democracy’ look like in the twenty-first century?

In this event, held on 11 June 2026, the @MileEndInstitute_QMUL and @qmulsse marked the launch of "Practical Social Democracy" (edited by Magnus Feldmann, Jonas Hinnfors and Mark Wickham-Jones) by inviting Jacqui Smith (Minister for Skills), Anneliese Dodds (Labour MP for Oxford East) and Marc Stears (Director, @UCLPolicyLab) to explore the past, present and future of a key political tradition.
