After the collapse of Soviet Union in 1991 former Warsaw pact members and few Post Soviet nations started showing their interest towards west by joining NATO or EU. By 2009 every single former member of Warsaw pact except Russia was Part of NATO.
Viktor Yanukovich a pro-Russian president declined to sign an association agreement with the European Union. He instead favoured closer ties with Russia thus sparking protest in Ukraine. Street fighting erupted in Kyiv - capital of Ukraine and demonstration across the country grew. Taking this as an Advantage Russia Annexed Crimea in March 2014.
A month Later Pro-Russian armed groups backed by Russia seize parts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions in Eastern Part of Ukraine which have majority Russian Ethnic Population. Ukrainian Government launched military operation in response and The West Imposed sanctions on Russia. By invading Ukraine Russia wanted to Stop Ukraine from maintaining Stronger Relationship with the West. Recently, The EU estimated that more than 100,000 Russian soldiers had amassed near the border as well as in Crimea. The tension between both the nations can turn into a major war.
