Learning D’Arce / Anaconda / Guillotine: 3 Attacks from Front Headlock for BJJ/No Gi Jiu-Jitsu
The d'arce, the anaconda, the high-elbow guillotine: which is which? All three of these powerful upper body attacks come from the front headlock and, yes, they’re all related. Often I field questions about which is which, where the arms go and what makes these three attacks distinct. So....we start from the front headlock. First we cover the high-elbow guillotine, which is easier to understand for most people since it doesn’t include the arm in the finish. The “anaconda”, a version of the arm triangle, is difficult to finish from directly in front of a partner, so we look at a rolling variation where we can cinch the strangle up with the use of our legs. Finally, the D’arce (we prefer “inverted katagatame”), requiring a change in angle to set up the turnover and the grips we need to finish.
