"In 2015, we starting hearing whispers. Whispers that some of our close friends, friends of friends, peers and seniors were suffering. Suffering from injury and illness sustained in conflict. Since 2000*, operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone and many other areas have really taken its toll on our military community and some of the after-effects
were now surfacing.

In December 2015, Des (my friend and business partner) and I sat down and discussed what we could do to help. We decided to set up a company. The initial idea was to give away profit to military charities. But what if we didn’t make a profit? And did business actually work like that? Were you left with a pot of cash at the end of the week, month or year?
We were determined to make a difference. So we sat at my kitchen table and asked ourselves: what organisation would we want to work with? What do we stand for? And why would we do what we do?"

"We started by writing down our vision. We’ll tell you more about this shortly. But put simply, this organisation was founded with the simple belief that
we had to help others.

Next, we defined our values.

Now, I’ve known Des since 2001 and we’ve been through a lot together - from Iraq to the rugby field and now business. I knew that our values aligned. But what about our company’s values?
Values are what sets us apart and what brings us, and those around us, closer together. Having a set of values that we agree to hold ourselves to and make business decisions around makes life significantly easier.

The next thing was to create an ethos. This ethos was to become the bedrock of who we were and how the company would run. At this time I was a serving firefighter and Des was working to combat piracy in the Indian Ocean. We looked at all the industries we had worked in. We cherry picked the good and dug deep into the bad. We didn’t want our foundations to be off-set. We wanted them to be simple, clear and strong."
