JOSÉ LUIS DE VILLONGA: "THE NUMBER ONES" - TODAY: PETER TOWNSEND
Group Captain Peter Wooldridge Townsend CVO, DSO, DFC & Bar (22 November 1914 – 19 June 1995) was a Royal Air Force officer, flying ace, courtier and author. He was equerry to King George VI from 1944 to 1952 and held the same position for Queen Elizabeth II from 1952 to 1953. Townsend notably had a romance with Princess Margaret, the Queen's only sibling.

Upon my return from New York in 1982, the young publicist Santiago Belloch, who turned into a producer with Bigas Luna ("Reborn" 1981), suggested that I do a series project with José Luis de Vilallonga: "The number one".

Santiago did not have any agreement with televisions, but he was convinced of his international success, as Vilallonga's book "GOLD GOTHA - LA CAFE SOCIETY DE ESTOS DÍAS" had had it, where he did long interviews with important international personalities, and that it inspired the Serie...
He jumped into the pool ...

I had a very close relationship with José Luis, one of the funniest people I have ever met, and it was an exciting traveling adventure ... He led a team of eight people, with two cameras and all the paphernalia that was necessary at the time ... We were shooting with :

Rafael de Paula in Jerez
Zino Davidoff in Crans Montana and Bern
Felipe González in Madrid and Cuenca
Melina Mercuri in Athens and Corinth

Unfortunately, Santiago Belloch's advertising and film companies went bankrupt, the series was interrupted and the material was lost ... The pool was empty ...

I have a great memory of everything, but especially of the singularities of José Luis. There was one that exasperated me: when he talked to me about the character we were going to portray he would tell me intimate anecdotes and hilarious situations that they had shared, but as soon as we started shooting the conversation he had with the protagonist was flat and did not get anything out of him that before he had told me. He could write it down, but not ask his face. José Luis was too elegant to bother the protagonist and friend ...
A couple of days ago I rescued a working copy of the only one of the five programs that I could edit with Anastasi Rinos, the one dedicated to Peter Townsend.
