Marshall MG Series Amplifier Noisy Fan Replacement Repair Guide - MG100DFX Guitar Combo, 50x10mm Fan

In this video I repair a faulty Marshall MG series combo guitar amplifier with a bad cooling fan. When switched on a loud grinding, rubbing and whirling noise would come from the fan for around a minute or so, then stop and be OK until left standing again.

This is a common issue with this series of Marshall heads and combo amplifiers that use the small 50x50x10mm cooling fans - but it is a pretty cheap and easy fix to perform as I show in this video.

The replacement fan needs to be 12 volts and measure 50mm across, and 10mm thickness. The thickness (10mm) is very important as the screws which hold the fan in pass through it and into the heatsink - anything thicker will NOT fit/work without different replacement screws.
The fan only requires 2 wires (red and black) as shown in the video, if your fan has any extra wires simply leave them disconnected as they are used for speed control and sensing, which is not required in this situation.

The best method by far is to solder the new fan onto the old fan connector/wiring and heat shrink the join as I do here, I strongly advise this over connector block or twist and tape methods as it gives a proper, secure and reliable connection.

Suitable replacement fans can be purchased online from the likes of eBay, Amazon and even computer or electronics retailers, some stores/shops may also carry them.
