Tabletop Simulator | Shelfside Review
In this Shelfside Review, we review Tabletop Simulator, a program that runs on Steam that is designed by Beserk Games. Tabletop Simulator is a physics-engine sandbox that is a platform to play thousands of board games, ranging from the ones included like Chess, Checkers, and Mahjong, to the community ports like kickstarter favorites like Gloomhaven, Kingdom Death Monster, and family friendly games like Catan, Monopoly, and Incan Gold/Diamont. Many games on popular BoardGameGeek can be found on TableTop simulator's modding library.
In the recent months, Tabletop Simulator has surged in popularity in the board game community, as it is one of the few ways to play board games digitally in the current lockdown. But not only can you play board games, you can add your own modded games, add in dice and cards to any game you would like, and house rule everything. The game even comes with an included RPG toolkit, where you can play games like Dungeons and Dragons (Dnd) and Pathfinder.
A common complaint against this video game is that it doesn't have scripts, or automated ways of playing games digitally. The games that do see more automation are typically paid DLC, in the forms of Zombicide, Wingspan, Blood Rage, and Scythe. Is this a the program's fault? Is it good for roleplaying or should you use Roll20? Watch till the end to see how we tackle this problem!
