"I test drove a car from Carvana but returned it within the seven-day window. This is my review and experience. While I think Carvana may be the future of car buying, I'm going to explain why the car I selected wasn't for me.

If you're new to Carvana, it's kind of like Amazon for cars. It's A website with thousands of used vehicles, lots of excellent photos, showing details on each vehicle. Free Carfax reports and the original dealer sticker are included with each listing.

Once you purchase the vehicle, they'll deliver it directly to your home for free if you're in a local market, like I was. Plus, you have a seven-day, 400-mile period to test and inspect it. If you don't like it, Carvana will come to pick it up for free! You can do this up to three times.

Here's how it unfolded for me, I had been saving up for a new car all year. I was interested in the Toyota 4Runner because I needed a bigger car for my lifestyle and wanted something to hold its value. Most cars depreciate very, very quickly. It took a few weeks to find a good 4runner because they go very fast! As soon as I saw one reasonably priced with all the right features, I reserved it and started going through the purchase process. Everything was very straightforward and easy. There are no negotiations like you would do at the dealership.

Carvana is very transparent about any imperfections with the car, and they do provide close-up pictures. The Carvana associate was very friendly and was happy to answer any questions.

During the 7-day trial, I begin to notice something wrong with the car. For example, there were more scratches and imperfections than the original picture on the website listing- which I wasn't going to complain about too much. Then I notice that the sunroof and passenger side mirror would not move when I pushed the buttons. This was concerning. The most disappointing thing was finding out that this specific four runner did not have a four-wheel drive. The car's total cost was $35,000 in total for a 2015 Toyota 4runner with 50k miles. It simply did not seem like a good deal anymore once learning about the things that didn't come included. I wish this were made more clear on the website. I will take fault for the 4WD part, but the broken sunroof and passenger side mirror were never mentioned along with the other car's other imperfections.

The return process was not as easy as they made it seem. I had to be on the phone with customer service for over an hour just to get on the line with someone to tell them I needed to return the car before the deadline.

Once on the line, they didn't give me too much difficulty, but they did ask a few questions on why I was returning the car. They scheduled a pick-up time, and they came a few days later. I must say the attendant picking up the car was just as kind as the one who dropped it off.

I attempted to find another car on Carvana, but they didn't have any that met my specifications.

I tried Facebook instead and instantly found the 2017 4runner sr5 premium for $27,000 with 60k miles and four-wheel drive. I drove 6 hours with my mom to get it thoroughly inspected by a top mechanic in the area and pick it up. I've now had the car for five months and am happy with it.

The point of the story is to explain that if you look for a used car elsewhere and do a little more digging, I can almost guarantee that you will be able to find a better deal on the car you're looking for. I saved $8,000 by using Facebook marketplace instead. Now, going that route is riskier in some ways, but I'm just sharing my experience.

Carvana can give you peace of mind, but they may not give you that financial peace with their inflated prices. Their listings tend to be on or above the high end of the Kelley blue book car values.
